Experiment 2 - The Space Between

Week 1 Tutorial - Architectural Concepts

Concept #1

Monumentalism (Aalvar Aalto)
  • The geometric format of Aalto's buildings implies a very clean and sharp facade, that is both functionally and visually aesthetic to the surrounding area.

Concept #2

Modern Material (MAD Architects)
  • The ongoing facade on their buildings creates an asymmetrical building design, insist the idea of disconnection to the urban polygonal landscape it has been set in.

Week 3 Tutorial - Light, Medium, Dark Texture

I used this Dark Texture for the flooring on my light rail stop. The reason for this is that I feel like this texture brings a mysterious vibe to students where it coincides with the eagerness of getting on the bus/train when it's about to come. This combination works well with my concept of "Modern Material" as it is an asymmetrical texture which allows the platform of the rail stop to stand out.

I am using this Light Texture on the stairs to get up to the railway platform. It brings a sense of attraction as bricks, letting students know that these stairs lead to the stop. This relates to my concept of "monumentalism" as it functionally and aesthetically fits in with its surroundings.

This medium texture was used on the railway tracks and roads to signify the transportation that is evident in my railway stop. It relates to the concept of "modern materials" as it showcases the disconnection that the roads/railway tracks have within the university campus. It denotes an idea where only vehicles are allowed on these markings.
